Why and How We Must Look to Jesus
Theme: Looking Unto Jesus
Text: HEBREWS 12:2
Minister: Bro Prosper Oshianor

The theme of looking unto Jesus is particularly pertinent in our current circumstances, not only concerning the economic situation but also the times we are currently facing. Jesus, speaking to his disciples in Matthew 24:13, emphasized the necessity of endurance for salvation. This implies that enduring through challenging times requires a firm foundation, as mentioned in 1 Samuel 12:9. God, in His wisdom, made provisions for the times to come, as Hebrews 1:1-4 highlights.
Jude 1:24-25 explains the measures put in place to ensure our firm standing in these times. The personification of Jesus represents God’s contingency plan for His people, as articulated in Matthew 24. Understanding the personality and character of Christ not only aligns with the timeliness of this theme but also reveals God’s intentions for us.
Now, let’s delve into why we are instructed to look to Jesus and how, by God’s grace, we can do so.
Why Should We Look To Jesus
- We are sojourners in this world with a race set before us (Hebrews 12:1). This is paramount, as emphasized in Mark 3:14, where Jesus prioritizes being with Him before focusing on drawing others into the race. Thus, while soul-winning is crucial, the Lord is equally concerned about the soul winner’s journey towards perfection.
- We must look to Him because as He is, so are we in this world. Understanding ourselves necessitates seeking out the one after whom we’ve been patterned. This is particularly crucial for effective communication and wisdom in soul-winning endeavors. We are living epistles (2 Corinthians 3:1-2), portraying Christ in all aspects of our lives. Just as there was a distinct difference in the early Christians’ behavior, there must be a noticeable distinction in our lives today.
- He is the source of all our needs (Acts 17:28). Our existence, sustenance, and provision stem from Him. Therefore, when facing challenges or uncertainties, we are urged to cast our cares upon Him, as reiterated in Matthew 11:28-30 and 1 Peter 5:7.
-
He is our light source, capable of dispelling darkness (John 1:5). This light enables us to see, understand, and apply knowledge in every aspect of our lives, as Ephesians 1:16-19 emphasizes. Through Jesus, we gain access to the unapproachable light of God, enabling us to excel in all we do.
In conclusion, looking unto Jesus isn’t just a timely admonition; it’s a fundamental aspect of our faith journey, revealing God’s intentions for us and guiding us through life’s challenges.
